Lala Guluzade is an industrial designer and co-creator of Wing Smart Security Ring for women in Turkey
LALA, PLEASE TELL US HOW WING RING WORKS AND YOUR PARTNERS IN THIS PROJECT.
Wing ring is a fashionable safety device that enables women to call for help with one click and without drawing unwanted attention. Wing needs to be connected to five phones to be reached during emergency situations. The person behind the connected phones can follow the person in danger in real time on the map and can call security services. The ring contains a panic button, hidden at the bottom of the ring. When woman feels unsafe, the panic button needs to be pressed for 3 seconds in order to notify connected phones. The notification is sent in the form of vibrations and the SMS.
Wing was developed in cooperation with Kuixo Information Technologies, a company operating in Bilkent Cyberpark. My main role was to design the product involving user research, idea generation, form exploration and creating 3D prototypes for the final product.
HOW THE IDEA OF BUILDING SUCH SYSTEM WAS BORN?
Unfortunately, in last few years, cases of woman abuse and stalking on the streets of Turkey have become disturbingly frequent. This social issue became an inspiration for designing a security device for women. Our aim was to design a ring which stands out from any other jewellery with its functionality. Therefore, Wing is an efficient and elegant device, comfortable for everyday wear.
The platform also helps to create safer communities and brings more confidence in women’s lives.
Moreover, for someone who lives alone or has health issues but does not want to wear a life alert tag around their neck, Wing is a good alternative.
WHY WOMEN NEED THESE KIND OF SECURITY DEVICES TO PROTECT THEMSELVES?
When I was a student in Milan, sometimes I had to leave the university very late. Even though Milan is considered to be a safe city, I had some insecurities and felt uncomfortable being alone on the street so late. Many people in Turkey, and some other countries, especially women who work late or have to use public transport, tend to experience certain insecurities.
Unfortunately, in Turkey, women have to take other security measures too, such as not being the last passenger to leave public transport or being alone on the street.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CREATING A COMMUNITY OF WING USERS?
Benefit of the community will be raising awareness among offenders about the security precautions. Wing is suitable for everyone who lives in big cities. Actually, there is a big demand for Wing from women in big cities.
